Packers tight end Colt Lyerla ruled out ‘multiple weeks’
By Jack Crosby
The Green Bay Packers took a chance this offseason on former troubled Oregon tight end Colt Lyerla. So far in training camp, though, it hasn’t been any off-the-field issues that have hindered his progress, rather it’s been his health. And after his most recent setback, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy says that the versatile tight end will miss “multiple weeks.”
Lyerla injured his knee this past week in camp during workouts, and it was originally thought to just be a sprain. But with this very vague timetable given for a return by McCarthy, it more or less shows that it could be something worse.

Where this hurts the most is the progression of Lyerla as an NFL player that could eventually find himself a spot on a roster. Already having to start at the bottom of the depth chart because of his past issues in Eugene, any practice time missed from this point on could be detrimental to that progression.
Of course, though, during training camp is when coaches are most secretive when it comes to injuries, so we’ll have to wait for an official word on the injury before we can speculate even more on where this young man is going.
