The Cincinnati Bengals are trying to get back to the playoffs for a fourth straight year under Andy Dalton’s leadership at quarterback but they want to try and get out of the first round this time.

More from Cincinnati Bengals

But what the Bengals want more than that is to become a consistent successful team over the long term, and that means locking down core pieces on offense. With Dalton secure and under long term contract, the attention will now shift to A.J. Green, as Peter King points out that’s the directive of head coach Marvin Lewis.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk., the Andy Dalton extension now makes way for an A.J. Green contract but that’s not something we should expect to be finalized soon.

"Despite the head coach’s directive, a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that a contract for Green isn’t expected “any time soon.” Dalton’s contract that was signed on Monday had been the subject of on-again, off-again talks since February."

Green will become club controlled for a very long time, but there will no doubt be a waiting period before that becomes official. There’s no way the Bengals will let Green get away from them but they have no need to rush into a deal right now and risk throwing off the delicate financial balance they’ve set in place for themselves.
