The TCU career of former Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Devonte Fields is reportedly over after meeting the school on Tuesday to address his status as a student, according to Forth Worth Star-Telegram blogger/columnist Mac Engel who first reported the news.

Fields was separated from the university last Tuesday pending results of an investigation in which Fields was a suspect in a domestic disturbance after he allegedly pointed a gun at his ex-girlfriend, Haley Brown’s face and communicating threats by saying “I should blast you!” and punching her in the head, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

"“Officers observed Haley’s right cheek to be swollen with a small cut under her eye. She refused to be taken to the hospital for further evaluation and told officers she did not want to pursue charges against Fields. Police, however, told her that a report and family violence packet must be completed.”"

On July 25, Fields surrendered to Tarrant Country authorities and booked on a misdemeanor assault warrant.

The sky was the limit for the defensive end after he was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman in 2012, but has been plagued with off-the-field incidents and injury ever since that debut season.

More from College Football

Fields played in only three games last year after serving a suspension for violating team rules and suffering an injury to his foot. Despite his lost season as a sophomore, Fields was named as this year’s preseason pick to win the Defensive Player of the Year award at Big 12 Media Days in July.

As a freshman, Fields had 10 sacks and 18 tackles for loss, numbers that were good for third and first in the conference in addition to 53 tackles. He had four tackles, two for loss and zero sacks as a sophomore.

Losing Fields from a 4-8 team that clearly needed a healthy and focused Fields will hurt Gary Patterson’s team, but the bigger statement being made is he is not going to tolerate violence against women and that is obviously very commendable.

Some players are worthy of receiving a second chance, but in the case of Fields, he used up all of his and will now have to get his life together before presumably entering the 2015 NFL Draft.

Fields has the talent of a first round-caliber player, but his numerous character concerns and year off from football wil undoubtedly result in him having a precipitous drop in next year’s draft.
