The Chicago Cubs got the attention of the baseball world with their decision to finally call up one of their top prospects in Javier Baez in advance of their game Tuesday night against the Colorado Rockies. It turns out that decision would immediately yield positive results as Baez delivered the winning home run in extra innings.

More from Chicago Cubs

In Baez’s first at-bat he had his “welcome to the big leagues, kid” moment against Rockies’ started Brett Anderson as he struck out on a beautiful back-foot breaking ball. That is understandable, as even the hottest prospect will have that moment right away upon their arrival from the minor leagues.

What is different for Baez, though, is the fact that he also got to enjoy his first moment of glory as a professional in that same game. In the 12th inning, Baez stepped up to the plate in a tie game against Rockies’ relief pitcher Boone Logan.

With one of the beautiful swings that has people so excited about the 21-year-old infielder in the first place, Baez sent a mighty shot over the fence in right-center field, one that landed in the back of the Rockies’ bullpen and was gone by a significant margin. A Coors Field creation this home run was not, and it would be the deciding blow as the Cubs held on for a 6-5 win.
