Last night’s Reds vs. Indians game in Cleveland wasn’t just another intrastate rivalry game.  It turned in to something out of the Twilight Zone.

More from Cincinnati Reds

In the seventh inning with the Reds leading 6-1, Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes stepped to the plate with Lonnie Chisenhall on second base and David Murphy on first.  Gomes hit a double into the right field corner at Progressive Field, which is right where the Reds’ bullpen is.

That’s when things got weird.

At the precise moment that Reds’ right fielder Jay Bruce fielded the ball off of the base of the bullpen, a ball got loose from the Reds’ bullpen and onto the field of play.  That’s right.  It was a wild pitch from the Reds’ bullpen.

No, it was not intentional.

At any rate, David Murphy was into third base on the Gomes double, and saw the ball from the bullpen resting in shallow center field.  He thought that the ball had gotten away on the throw to second, when in reality, Reds second baseman Kris Negron had the ball in his glove.

Well, being the heads up guy that he is, Murphy broke for home, and was a sitting duck.  By the time he realized what was going on, it was already too late.

The Indians went on to lose 9-2 to Johnny Cueto and the Reds.  Cueto went the distance for the win.
