The Detroit Lions have signed veteran cornerback Drayton Florence to bolster their depth at the defensive back position. Florence started five games last year for the Carolina Panthers, notching two interceptions and one touchdown.

More from Detroit Lions

Prior to joining the Panthers last season, Florence was a member of the Detroit Lions squad in the 2012 season. That year Florence only played in eight games, recording one interception and 19 tackles.

Florence has been a journeyman in his 11 year NFL career. After being drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the second round in 2003, Florence went on to play for four more teams in the next several seasons.

At 33 years old, Florence likely does not have too much left in the gas tank, but is certainly able to hold his own in Nickel defensive sets. His veteran leadership can not be undermined as well, considering that he has played in six playoff games while racking in three interceptions.

Florence joins Detroit starters Darius Slay and Rashean Mathis, and will likely be fighting for a roster spot against the likes of Jonte Green, Cassius Vaughn, Chris Greenwood and Bill Bentley.

The details of Florence’s contract have yet to be revealed, but it is more than likely that the Lions signed him to a one-year deal for the veteran’s minimum. It will be interesting to see if Florence gets any playing time during the preseason to prove his worth to the team.
