Hakeem Nicks has been slowed by some health and injury concerns at the end of his tenure with the New York Giants and similar concerns arose in recent days with the Indianapolis Colts after offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton said Nicks was working to get in shape.

Nicks, 26, signed a one-year deal with the Colts in a make-good type of deal to show he can still be a No. 1 receiver in the league, but the comments from Hamilton rubbed Nicks the wrong way.

According to Josina Anderson of ESPN, a team source said Nicks “seems to be on schedule with his workouts now” and that Hamilton’s comments were about Nicks getting in to game shape, which is typical for players during the opening days of training camp.

Rumors began to circulate after Hamilton’s comments that Nicks could even be in danger of not making the team, completely ridiculous assertions this early in camp, and Nicks wants you to know he’s in the best shape of his career.

"“I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in…I came in weighing 209 when I was supposed to come in weighing 212. After Pep came to me to clarify, he said that he (meant) everybody’s getting into game shape right now–it’s the beginning of camp. He came apologizing to let me know he wasn’t just singling me out.”"

Nicks had 56 receptions for 896 yards in 15 games last season for the Giants but failed to score a single touchdown.

Catching passes from Andrew Luck could be just what Nicks needs to revitalize his career and playing alongside Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton should ensure that he faces a lot of man-to-man coverage.

Nicks and the Colts open the preseason on Thursday night against the New York Jets.
