The New York Knicks had been attempting to trade Wayne Ellington for a few weeks after acquiring the guard from the Dallas Mavericks earlier this offseason, though the team was struggling to find a taker.

After searching throughout the league, the Knicks came across the Sacramento Kings who were more than willing to make a move assuming the Knicks were to take back Travis Outlaw. It was a trade the New York Knicks brass was comfortable with as they sent Ellington to the California capital along with Jeremy Tyler in exchange for Outlaw and Quincy Acy.

Sacramento made the move because they couldn’t use the stretch provision on Travis Outlaw, something they can do with Wayne Ellington.

As for the Knicks, they just wanted to clear up a logjam and general manager Steve Mills seems happy with how things shook out.

“We feel good about the core of our backcourt right now in terms of the number of guys that we have at [shooting guard] and [point guard] and we are going to play a two-guard front,” Mills said. “We have a lot of guys who are interchangeable between the 1-2, and in some cases, the 2 and the 3.”

Despite being content with his backcourt, Mills is still reportedly open for business elsewhere.

“I think we’re always looking at ways to improve the team and we’ll continue to look at opportunities to enhance our ability to be successful.”

The New York Knicks don’t have a ton of assets outside of expiring contracts, so it’s unlikely any big deals will be made. Still, that doesn’t mean the Knicks aren’t on the prowl.
