Xavi named captain of FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona has named its captains for the 2014-15 season after a poll within the club. The midfielder, who has been a member of Barcelona for the duration of his career, will take the post from Carles Puyol, who retired this summer. Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, and Sergio Busquets will serve as co-captains according to a report from Goal.com.

FC Barcelona has experienced a fall from grace this summer, with allegations of shady tactics to secure Neymar, as well as Lionel Messi’s tax evasion scheme. Now more than ever, the club needs leadership from the long-time Barcelona stars.

Xavi was approached by different clubs in the off-season when he was reportedly dissatisfied with his role at Barcelona. New York City FC and several organizations in the middle east approached Xavi as a new addition to their squads. But in the end, he chose not to leave the FC Barcelona family.

After last season, Barcelona has unfinished business in both La Liga and the Champions Cup. Last season was not a failure by most teams standards, but for FCB, whose motto is “Més que un club” or “More than a club,” not winning a trophy was a disappointment.

Tomorrow we will find out the result Luis Suarez’s appeal for his actions in the world cup. The Barcelona faithful are hoping they will get to see him in their iconic colors before October.
