The Dallas Mavericks have had trouble attracting free agents lately and they once again missed out on a top tier free agent when New York Knicks’ forward Carmelo Anthony decided to re-sign in New York without really giving much thought to joining the Dallas Mavericks despite his visit with owner Mark Cuban and the Mavericks.

More from Dallas Mavericks

It seems strange that some free agents don’t give the Mavericks more thought considering they have an owner committed to winning, have a recent history of success and have no state income tax. Things changed after they missed on Anthony. The Mavericks gave Houston Rockets’ forward Chandler Parsons an offer sheet worth $46 million over three years. the Rockets chose not to match the offer. The Mavericks like Parsons’ game now and they believe he will continue to improve.

“We think he can take his game to a whole ‘nother level,” Mavs owner Mark Cuban said recently via Tim McMahon of ESPN Dallas.

“I think he’ll be far better,” Cuban said. “I think he’ll have the opportunity to showcase a lot more of his talent. He’s a good passer, he can drive the ball, he was top two or three in terms of finishing using floaters at the bucket. He doesn’t get to the foul line enough, but that’s something we’re going to work on with him.”

Parsons averaged 16.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 47.2% from the field, 37.0% from beyond the arc and 74.2% from the free throw line last season.
