As New York Yankees’ shortstop Derek Jeter plays out the final two months of his big league career, pending a playoff appearance, there are certain accomplishments that stand out more from others.

Suffice it to say that any record that involves the name Honus Wagner, the greatest shortstop of all time, is one that puts Jeter or any other player on hallowed ground. There are no qualifiers needed. If your name is in the same sentence as the ‘Flying Dutchman’ in terms of a career accomplishment, you’re in rare air indeed.

With 3,430 hits in his career, Jeter will pass Wagner with his next hit. When he does, he will be behind only five men all time in the hits category. That list is as follows: Tris Speaker, Stan Musial, Hank Aaron, Ty Cobb, and Pete Rose. This feat allows Jeter to add his name to yet another list of the guys who wrote baseball’s history.

The hit itself does not overwhelm , as Jeter legged out an infield single on a tough play up the middle. Had Carlos Santana been able to handle the throw from shortstop Jose Ramirez, the Indians would have recorded the out. But good on Jeter for hustling, and he was appropriately rewarded for his ability, once again, to use his inside out swing and hit the ball up the middle.
