Earlier this week former Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, Devonte Fields announced he would be transferring to Stephen F. Austin after being removed from TCU for off-the-field incidents.

However, after TCU convened a committee, declaring Fields’ violations of the student honor code has warranted his suspension and will no longer be eligible to play at any level, according to Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman.

A statement from Stephen F. Austin regarding the status of Fields:

"“After originally agreeing to grant a release to Devonte Fields, which would allow him to enroll and play football at Stephen F. Austin, Texas Christian University has since convened a committee and declared that Fields does not meet the requirements to attain the one-time transfer waiver. The decision by TCU renders Fields ineligible, prohibiting him from participating in football related activities at SFA for at least one year. In light of these developments, Fields has decided not to enroll at SFA and will not be a member of the Lumberjack football team.SFA head football coach Clint Conque will have no comment, stating this a decision of Texas Christian University and is a matter involving Fields and TCU.”"

Fields was the Big 12 top defender as a freshman and was voted by the media at Big 12 Media Days as the preseason pick to win the award again this year, despite only playin in parts of three games last year and failing to record a sack.

As a freshman, Fields had 10 sacks and 18 tackles for loss, numbers that were good for third and first in the conference in addition to 53 tackles. He had four tackles, two for loss and zero sacks as a sophomore.

Some players are worthy of receiving a second chance, but in the case of Fields, he used up all of his and will now have to get his life together before presumably entering the 2015 NFL Draft.

Fields has the talent of a first round-caliber player, but his numerous character concerns and year off from football wil undoubtedly result in him having a precipitous drop in next year’s draft.
