In the Buffalo Bills’ second preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, Bills fans got to see a side of E.J. Manuel that they hope shows more often during his second professional season.

More from Buffalo Bills

Manuel started game the game 5-of-5 for 53 yards on the Bills’ opening drive, which ended inside the Panthers two yard line after an excellent fourth down stop by the Carolina defense.

After the opening drive of the game, Manuel went 4-of-8 for 43 yards to finish his night at 9-of-13 for 96 yards. He also was sacked once after a missed block by rookie Cyril Richardson.

After going just 2-of-7 for only 19 yards against the New York Giants in the Hall of Fame Game, Manuel’s performance against the Panthers has to give Bills fans good feelings going forward. Of course, it’s only a very small showing, and it is only preseason, but it’s still encouraging to see a young QB improve over time.

Mike’s Musings: I won’t read too much into it, but it was nice to see Manuel actually have some success. Still, I noticed way too much staring down of receivers by Manuel on Friday night. That is one thing that needs to be improved to avoid costly turnovers.
