It took until preseason game number two, but fourth overall pick Sammy Watkins finally made his first reception as a member of the Buffalo Bills.

More from Buffalo Bills

It came on the Bills’ opening drive of their game against the Carolina Panthers on Friday night. The catch came on a 2nd and 8 play from the Buffalo 36-yard line.

Quarterback E.J. Manuel took a few steps back before finding Watkins on the slant route for the nice gain. Watkins was then upended by Panthers safety Robert Lester, but he came up without issue.

As of this posting, Watkins has three catches for 21 yards, with the 14 yard reception being the longest of the game, and the Bills currently lead the Panthers 3-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Mike’s Musings: The Bills first-team offense looked much better during their opening drive against the Panthers than it did during the Hall of Fame Game against the New York Giants. Buffalo went 78 yards on its opening drive before being stopped on a goalline stand by the Panthers Defense.
