Former USC quarterback Max Wittek will reportedly walk-on at Hawaii, according to Stephen Tsai, sports reporter/blogger for the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

When Wittek announced his intentions to transfer to another program to complete his college career with Cody Kessler asserting himself as the starting quarterback with the Trojans, the Texas Longhorns were the early leader, but things fell through with the Longhorns and Hawaii emerged as the front-runner.

In early July, a report from the Honolulu Star Advertiser reported Wittek and his family were having having ongoing conversations about enrolling at Hawaii.

His relationship with former USC assistant coach Norm Chow is reportedly an overriding factor for Wittek in wanting to play for the Rainbow Warriors.

“I feel great with coach Chow,” Wittek said. “He’s awesome. He’s been so helpful through this whole process.”

Chow also is close friends with Wittek’s quarterback mentor Steve Clarkson who tells me Wittek is the most talented arm he has had to work with in a long time.

“The biggest thing that Max brings to Hawaii is a real first round NFL-caliber quarterback, Clarkson said in an email interview. Colt Brennan was a great player for them, but Max brings the arm and skill-set that Norm Chow hasn’t seen since he coached Carson Palmer or Philip Rivers at USC and North Carolina State, respectively.”

Wittek did not graduate from USC this spring so he will not be eligible in 2014 should walk-on at Hawaii, but would be eligible to play in 2015 and compete for the starting job with Ikaika Woolsey, Beau Reilly and Eric Prater as well as Aaron Zwahlen, who will return from serving a mission next summer.
