At first glance, the opening weekend of the college football season doesn’t spark much interest outside of the fact that these are games that actually count. Most big-time programs have mastered the unfortunate practice of scheduling cupcakes — often even an FCS opponent — for their opening weekend games.

As a fan of good football every weekend (as I assume you are as well), I can’t stand this. Hopefully, the arrival of the new College Football Playoff is the catalyst that begins to buck that trend.

That said, a closer look at the opening weekend schedule reveals that there are some true diamonds in the rough in terms of quality football games that you’ll want to tune into — some of which even appear to have serious College Football Playoff implications.
