The Boston Celtics say they don’t want to trade All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo, but what choice do they really have? Little if the former Kentucky Wildcat doesn’t commit to them long term.

More from Boston Celtics

Set to not only be a free agent after the 2014-15 season, Rajon Rondo will likely be the premier player available and could cash-in on the $100 million dollar contract he reportedly seeks. Knowing that, the Boston Celtics need to get a commitment from Rajon Rondo either way.

Of course, turning down a massive contract isn’t easy to do and if the Boston Celtics aren’t going to pony up the cash to keep him, a trade seems inevitable according to Basketball Insiders.

"It seems inevitable that Rondo is going to be traded, the question is what’s the return going to be for Boston, especially when it’s more likely than not that Rondo explores his options in July?"

Boston raised some eyebrows regarding Rajon Rondo’s future in Beantown when they went guard heavy during the most recent NBA Draft, some suggesting those moves were made with Rondo’s Boston future (or lack of) in mind.

That’s something only Danny Ainge and the rest of the Celtics front office knows, though if the Celtics aren’t willing to commit financially to Rondo or he’s not willing to commit to Boston before the February trade deadline, it seems as if the most logical move is a trade. They could of course attempt to work out a sign-and-trade deal at season end as well, though that’s rather risky for the Celtics as Rondo could bolt without any compensation.
