Last weekend the Houston Texans took the field for the first preseason game of the 2014 season against the Arizona Cardinals sporting a new quarterback and new head coach. Needless to say their performance was deplorable as the offense could not get anything going.

The Texans ultimately lost the game 32-0, and the quarterback play for the team was simply atrocious. Starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 55 yards on 6-14 passing and two interceptions.  The backups were only slightly better as Case Keenum was 3-5 with 29 yards and Tom Savage was 2 for 3 with 14 yards.

After the game, head coach Bill O’Brien made it very clear that a quarterback change could potentially occur down the road if the play from Fitzpatrick did not improve.

Today, O’Brien put his money where his mouth is as Case Keenum was given valuable first team reps according to Rotoworld. Although the first team reps do not necessarily mean Keenum will be getting the start this weekend or for the first week in the regular season, it will definitely be a sign to Ryan Fitzpatrick that he has to improve if he wants to keep the starting job.

Although the quarterback play was terrible in week 1, the Texans were without their two best offensive players in Andre Johnson and Arian Foster. You have to believe that the quarterback play will at least improve somewhat once Johnson and Foster hit the field and make the game harder for opposing defenses.

At this point it seems that there is a quarterback competition down in Houston, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out prior to the commencement of the regular season in a few weeks.
