The New York Giants have missed the playoffs two straight years after winning Super Bowl XLVI against the New England Patriots. In 2011, quarterback Eli Manning threw for 4,933 yards, 29 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Two years later in 2013, Manning threw for 3,818 yards, 18 touchdowns and 27 interceptions.

More from New York Giants

Manning, along with star defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul struggled in 2013 where he recorded just two sacks. But now, GM Jerry Reese is relying on them more than ever.

“There are two guys on our team that have to play well and it’s Eli Manning and Jason Pierre-Paul,” Reese recently told SI.com’s Don Banks. “If those guys play well, I think we’ve got a chance to be really good.”

Pierre-Paul’s numbers are also down from the Super Bowl winnings 2011 season when he recorded 87 combined tackles and 16.5 sacks and then in 2013 recorded just 27 combined tackles and two sacks.

The Giants undoubtedly rely on Manning the most on offense and Pierre-Paul the most on defense and if the Giants want to have a winning season they’ll have to perform. But will the added pressure from Reese help or hurt them?

The Giants rank 26th in ESPN’s strength of schedule and will jump into an important game early when they take on the re-surging Detroit Lions on Monday Nigh Football in week 1.

New York, who is 2-0 in the preseason so far, will be in Indianapolis taking on the Colts in their third preseason match up.
