New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith is competing with Michael Vick for the team’s starting quarterback job. It would appear that Smith has the edge and is poised to take over the starting role, but that could be more about his work off the field than on it.

More from New York Jets

When Smith is preparing for his upcoming games, the young quarterback has been watching his own game film to notice his flaws that need work, along with watching game film of opposing defenses so he can pick up on tendencies he could see on the field during gameday.

“I like watching film anyway,” Smith said. “It was one of those things where I didn’t have anything to do anyway, so I just wanted to kind of get ahead of stuff.”

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Jets head coach Rex Ryan is very impressed.

“That’s smart as hell though,” Ryan said, via the report. “I never even knew about it. . . . He wants to be great. He just doesn’t want to be a guy that gets through. God touched the kid. He’s got so much ability. He can throw, he can run, he can do all that. But it’s that work ethic. As a quarterback, you almost have to be a gym rat. And he’s done it.”

It will be interesting to see whether or not that extra film study will lead to improvements off the field, but it certainly has helped Smith in the eyes of his coaching staff.
