Mixon was charged with the misdemeanor count of an act resulting in gross injury.
The five-star recruit of California was the Sooners highest-ranked recruit in the 2014 class and has been held out of fall camp as the investigation continued.
After the charges were handed down to Mixon on Friday afternoon, the OU athletic department issued a statement within the hour.
Statement from OU Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Programs and Athletics Director Joe Castiglione:
"“The University of Oklahoma understands that charges have been filed against Joe Mixon based upon an investigation by local law enforcement agencies. Under its policies, the University must independently evaluate student conduct matters and will review the facts as part of its internal process. At an appropriate time, the University will determine Mixon’s status.”"
According to the police affidavit, Mixon lunged at Molitor, prompting her to slap him and he punched her one time in the face. The affadavit also says Mixon used a gay slur toward one of her friends, which instigated the altercation that resulted in a young woman’s face being broken.
Mixon faces up to a year in prison for this charge and could be sued by Molitor for the assault, so how should Oklahoma punish Mixon?
Oklahoma has the chance to send a swift and loud message with a lengthy suspension, one that the NFL failed to do with Ray Rice, so is Mixon looking at a suspension of four, eight, the entire season?
