With all the transfer news surrounding Arsenal FC this summer it’s been hard to discern what’s credible and what’s a rumor. But, given Arsenal’s need at defense, a move for Olympiakos Kostas Manolas isn’t out of the question.
At the World Cup this summer Manolas was the backbone of Greece’s defense, bringing a lot of attention his way. After Thomas Vermaelen’s sale to Barcelona, Arsenal is in need of a center back to fill his position. Arsene Wenger is hoping Manolas can fill that void.
Last year Arsenal’s successful loan of Joel Campbell to Olympiakos shows that the two clubs have a good transfer relationship. But Wenger has competition to get Manolas’ signature. According to reports, Juventus and several other clubs in England are also interested.
To secure Manolas, Arsenal must offer eight million pounds or 13.35 million USD according to Christian Karembeu of Olympiakos. If Arsenal is able to secure Manolas, Arsene Wenger would likely move Calum Chambers to holding midfielder.
Arsenal’s downfall last year was because of defensive problems late in the season. Without a true CDM, Arsenal struggled to protect themselves against the attacks of Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool. Wenger hopes to combat those issues with the signing of Sami Khedira and Kostas Manolas.
The transfer deadline is fast approaching. Clubs have only two weeks to make their final roster changes. If all goes well, Arsenal will likely see a few more new player at Emirates this year.
