Cristiano Ronaldo favorite for UEFA player of the year

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named this year’s favorite for the UEFA player of the year following Real Madrid’s Super Cup victory over Sevilla by Spanish newspaper AS. Ronaldo scored the only two goals of the contest for the Man of the Match performance. AS also noted that Ronaldo’s chief competition for the award comes from Arjen Robben and Manuel Neuer of Bayern Munich.

Real Madrid’s attack features a ton of world class talent, including James Rodriguez, Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos, and Angel Di Maria (assuming he doesn’t leave). The club has asserted itself as not only Spain’s but the World’s most formidable team. Madrid is the favorite to win La Liga this year, and Ronaldo believes the club can repeat as winner of the Champions Cup.

The rivalry between Madrid and FC Barcelona is set to intensify this season as a healthy Lionel Messi will look to retake the Spanish crown. Few rivalries have been as intense as El Clasico these past few years, as the systemic hatred between the two clubs grows with every signing. The Messi, Neymar, and Suarez (when he’s eligible) attack will give Madrid a run for its money.

Only time will tell what will happen this season in La Liga.
