Preseason is the perfect time for a young quarterback to shine. The opposing defense is typically comprised of backups. Many of them don’t really know what they’re doing. Yet somehow, Blaine Gabbert’s quarterback rating isn’t higher than…. The fourth-year quarterback is second on the 49ers depth chart, but that can’t possibly be for long.

Gabbert struggled against the Broncos’ defense, throwing 8 of 14 for 40 yards and an interception. At least he recorded a tackle? His day makes him 11 of 25 for 60 yards and 2 interceptions through the first two weeks of preseason. That yields the 17.9 quarterback rating. His performance Sunday earned him some unfortunate twitter bashing.

The 49ers acquired Gabbert this offseason, and frankly, they couldn’t be a better landing spot for a young, struggling quarterback. Between the coaching of Jim Harbaugh and the help from veteran receivers Anquan Boldin and recently Brandon Lloyd, Gabbert should have begun showing signs of improvement by now. He’s spent four years in the league. He’s been tried and tested — and he has been left wanting. His days in the league are seemingly numbered.

Gabbert was selected 10th overall by the Jaguars in 2011. He has since thrown 777 passes for 414 completions. He has 4,357 yards, 22 touchdowns and 24 interceptions in the regular season.
