Arsenal is very close to securing CB Kostas Manolas in the coming days. Greek club Olympiakos has accepted Arsenal’s bid for a $13.35 million dollar transfer according to Metro, and he has taken the team physical according to Goal.com.
Arsenal need to move quickly to complete the deal, as Manchester United and Bayern Munich reportedly entering the bidding for his services. Arsenal needs a CB, and it looks like the Thomas Vermaelen replacement has come.
So what is holding this deal back? Manolas wants a job in the starting XI. So, with Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny as the center backs, where does Manolas fit? He’s versatile and quick, so there’s potential to place him at LB over an injured Kieran Gibbs or perhaps even at holding midfielder.
In Arsenal’s match against Crystal Palace, the same problems the team had last year came back. Lack of depth for the back four and a weakness at defensive midfield. These problems made Arsenal stagnate at times, so its clear they need to make improvements now.
If Arsenal wants Manolas, Arsene Wenger needs to act quickly. The pieces are in place to get the deal done but a better offer may come for Olympiakos any day.
