The NBA schedule was released earlier this week, and while fans see the start of the season as still many weeks away, coaches are preparing now just as hard as if the season started tomorrow. The job of NBA coaches is a tough one. Win, and you are paraded around town. But if you start losing, it doesn’t matter how good you were or what you did — you will be ran out of town faster than you can say “One more year?”

The NBA does have some excellent coaches, so we ranked the 10 best before the start of the season. A couple of conditions — I tried to avoid any new hires. I know that Stan Van Gundy is an excellent coach, but I kept him and all the other new coaches off the list because we haven’t seen them with their new teams yet. Also, any coaches fired this summer were obviously not on the list.
