Kansas City Chiefs held Jamaal Charles out for ‘precautionary reasons’
By Cory Buck
The Kansas City Chiefs played their second exhibition match against the Carolina Panthers without star running back Jamaal Charles, who didn’t even make the trip to Charlotte. Head coach Andy Reid was quick to alleviate any concern over the move though, calling it ‘precautionary’ in the post-game presser on the team’s website.

“With Jamaal Charles, he twisted his foot and kind of freak thing. It didn’t happen at practice. It was after practice [when] we were leaving and so, we held him out. Precautionary measures. I think he’s going to be fine but I left him back at home. We’ll go from there but he’s doing well.”
It’s not like the Chiefs need extra reps for Charles, who has established himself as one of the biggest backfield threats in the NFL since his breakthrough campaign in 2009, when he gained 1,120 rushing yards.
Charles tallied over 1,900 rushing and receiving yards along with 19 combined touchdowns, the latter of which was a career high. The team recently added more money to Charles’ contract this summer.
If anything, the Chiefs are simply protecting their investment by sitting him through the preseason.
Expect Jamaal Charles to be healthy and ready to go for Week 1 of the regular season, where he will once again carry Kansas City’s offense as well as a few million fantasy football teams.
