Th San Francisco 49ers took a chance on Marcus Lattimore after he tore his knee to shreds his senior year at South Carolina and now two years later the team is still being cautious with the running back.

More from NFL

It was 2012 when Lattimore tore up his knee and now in 2014 he’s still not back and the Niners are still not practicing him in training camp. But don’t expect Lattimore to miss another full season as the Niners are looking to use him at some point during the season.

According to ESPN.com, the 49ers are expected to activate Marcus Lattimore at some point this season but it still appears unclear just when that time is going to come.

"Practice-squad player [Jewel] Hampton has been turning heads, and he should make the team with Marcus Lattimore still not practicing. Expect Lattimore to be activated sometime during the season."

With Frank Gore aging, Kendall Hunter out for the season and LaMichael James banged up, it’s going to come down to someone stepping up for the Niners this season — and Lattimore isn’t alone. Carlos Hyde is looking to prove himself as a rookie and wild cards like Jewel Hampton can’t be counted out either.

Still, just to see Lattimore get on the field again will be huge and the Niners will likely make it happen in 2014.
