The San Francisco 49ers don’t want to cave regarding the contractual demands from guard Alex Boone, but somebody is going to have to blink first and it doesn’t appear to be Boone.

More from NFL

For weeks the offensive lineman has maintained that he will sit out until he gets a contract deserving of his talent level, which apparently is higher quality than most considering Boone recently turned down a contract offer which would have made him the 12th highest paid offensive lineman in the league.

That’s the word from NFL.com’s senior analyst Gil Brandt, who broke the news early Monday afternoon.

It’s a very fair offer on the part of the San Francisco 49ers, especially given their mounting contractual obligations. Given that, you have to wonder how much more the 49ers will be willing to pony up in effort to get Alex Boone signed.

The pressing issue for San Francisco is that there aren’t a lot of options to replace Boone if he continues to sit out. They could trade him, but they’re not going to get anything of value and the free agent market is extremely thin. They could attempt to move a player into his position, but they’d be creating another hole with an addition by subtraction move.

It seems more and more likely that the 49ers will have to give in if they want to get Boone signed and he certainly has the leverage after San Francisco’s offense has sputtered through their first two preseason contests.
