Ryan Malone has cocaine charges conditionally dismissed

Ryan Malone pled no-contest to DUI charges and entered a pre-trial intervention program that would wipe out his pending charge for possession of cocaine, per Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times.

Malone was arrested on April 12 for DUI and possession of cocaine and had originally pled not-guilty to those charges. Now it appears he’ll only have to defend his DUI charge, provided he can remain compliant per the court’s standards.

Ryan Malone remains an unrestricted free agent in the NHL after the Tampa Bay Lightning exercised a compliance buyout on his contract this summer. His agent maintains that several teams remain interested in Malone’s services, but it stands to reason said teams will be content to wait and see how the rest of Malone’s charges pan out and whether or not he can stick to his pre-trial program before making any commitment.

If Malone were to fail in any way, the charges stemmed from his possession could permanently damage the 34-year-old forward’s chances of returning to the NHL.
