Following the departure of Liverpool top scorer Luis Suarez to Barcelona, the club have been linked with a number of world class strikers, and one that seems the most likely comes in the form of ex-Manchester City forward Mario Balotelli. Like Suarez, Balotelli has caused controversy in the past, particularly during his stint in the Premier League.
Balotelli has been linked with a return to England, with Arsenal reportedly interested in his signature in the past, though Liverpool are now front runners for the Italian’s signature.
According to Di Marzio, ‘Super Mario’s’ agent – Mino Raiola – has been in England to discuss terms with potential suitors. While Arsenal may still be in the hunt for Balotelli, Liverpool have been keen to add to their strike force following the summer arrival of Rickie Lambert and Divock Origi (who was immediately loaned back to Lille).
Di Marzio’s report states the following:
"“One club who is certainly interested is Liverpool, but at the moment they would only do the deal on loan with option to buy, but this is just a first option. Milan would only move Balotelli on a straight sale.”"
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been active this summer, spending over £100 million on new recruits such as Adam Lallana and Lavar Markovic. Rodgers announced his intentions to continue his spending before the August 31 deadline, per Talk Sport.
Other potential targets for the club include the likes of Javier Hernandez and Falcao, with the latter also linked with a season-long loan deal.
It is unknown whether Rodgers will consider a permanent deal for Balotelli at this time, though his interest in the Italy international seems to be confirmed.
