The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reportedly cut wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins.

According to Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, via Twitter:

The move comes a week before rosters have to be trimmed from 90 players to 75. The final cut to 53 players comes Aug. 30, after the final preseason game.

Hawkins had two catches for 25 yards and a touchdown in two preseason games for the Buccaneers.

Both catches came in Saturday’s 20-14 loss to the Miami Dolphins. The touchdown reception from Mike Kafka came with just 14 seconds left in the game.

Hawkins spent five seasons with the Tennessee Titans from 2008-12 after Tennessee took him in the fourth round of the 2008 draft. He had 71 receptions with the Titans, with 47 of them coming in 2011.

He played four games with the San Diego Chargers last season but did not catch a pass.

Tampa Bay brought him in thinking that a reunion with his former college coach, Buccaneers offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford, could be beneficial, but it appears that didn’t work out.

Hawkins had 72 catches for 872 yards and six touchdowns in 2007 playing for Tedford at California before declaring for the NFL draft.

A kick returner in college, Hawkins infrequently was used as a return man in Tennessee and had eight returns for 176 yards, a 22-yard per return average, for San Diego last season.
