Fantasy Football 2014: Miami Dolphins RB Rundown

facebooktwitterreddit

The Dolphins offense was inconsistent last season in QB Ryan Tannehill’s first year in the NFL.  It didn’t help Tannehill that the Dolphins O-line struggled to protect him or open holes in the running game.  Miami ranked in the bottom 7 in the league in total rushing yards and rushing touchdowns while averaging only 90 yards per game on the ground.

More from Fantasy Football

This offseason, Miami tried to address their needs along the offensive line and also brought in a new running back to add to the mix.  It looks like a two-back battle to become the primary rusher, and this week’s third preseason game should go a long way to deciding who gets the majority of the Dolphins carries. Lamar Miller hasn’t done much to separate himself from newcomer Knowshon Moreno, and with Moreno healthy we should get a better idea what to expect.

Here is my look at each of the Dolphins options in the  backfield as we continue our RB Rundowns.  The rankings included are from my top 80 RB which came out last week and which will be updated later this week.

player. 59. I like Moreno just a little bit better than Lamar Miller. It isn’t often that you can add the #5 fantasy running back from the previous season this late in the draft, but it shows how much Moreno’s output is perceived as a result of facing defenses focused on Peyton Manning.  The Broncos decided not to bring Moreno back, but after a knee scope in June he’s ready to contribute now in Miami.  My guess is that he’ll get the majority of the work, but I’m not sure how valuable that will be behind a shaky line and without Manning to thin out the opposing defensive front.  Moreno has some upside as a high-risk low-end RB3.  If you can get him as a fourth back and not have to count on him, he could be a risk that pays off. . RB. Miami Dolphins. Knowshon Moreno. 33

Miami Dolphins. Lamar Miller. 46. player. 59. Miller has the straight line speed to be an elite RB, but he lacks the physical ability to take on tacklers that is also necessary in the NFL.  He struggled mightly last year, and Miami brought in Knowshon Moreno to keep him from being their only option.  He has upside enough to be a flier in late rounds, and he could get plenty of work if Moreno goes down. Last year, he didn’t really impress in his time as the main back, though, so don’t count on him to produce.  You don’t want him to be your first option at flex even, so look for him as a depth option as your fifth running back in standard-size leagues.. RB

59. Thomas is fighting for his roster spot and has missed most of the preseason with a hamstring issue.  He got over 100 carries last year, but he isn’t lined up to get much work this season aside from something major changing. You don’t need to take up a roster spot on Thomas even in deep leagues.. RB. Miami Dolphins. Daniel Thomas. NR. player
