The baseball world is currently transfixed on Cuban prospect Rusney Castillo, as the success of former Cuban imports in recent memory has led to teams wanting to invest in the stars before they blossom at the Major League level.

More from Boston Red Sox

Yasiel Puig, Jose Abreu and Yoenis Cespedes have all bloomed into stars in baseball and now it’s looking like Castillo is the next big thing. While everyone wants him, it appears there are two clear front runners to land him in the near future as he could still be signed this year for a pennant run.

According to Gordon Edes from ESPN.com, the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers are the two leaders at the moment to land Castillo on a deal.

"The Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers appear to be the front-runners for the services of Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo, two league sources said Thursday, with a decision expected no later than the weekend."

Both teams are in a pennant chase at the moment with the Red Sox already having one of the aforementioned Cuban sensations on their roster in Cespedes. Adding Castillo might put them over the top but the same could be said for the Tigers. No matter who signs him, Castillo is in for a massive pay day that could effect free agent spending this winter for teams on a budget or with big names to pay.
