The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team announced Thursday that Tim Howard will not be retiring, but he will be taking a break until Sept. 2015 in order to spend more time with family.

There was much speculation that the U.S. would no longer benefit from Tim Howard, 35, in the net after their 2-1 loss to Belgium in the 2014 FIFA World Cup round of 16 where Howard recorded 16 saves, the most ever in World Cup history.

Tim Howard has been a goalie on the USMNT since 2002 and has played in 104 games for the U.S. Howard has also played for Everton in the English Premier League as their goalkeeper since 2006 where he’s played in 298 matches.

In a Facebook post, Tim Howard explained why he will be leaving the national team for a year.

“I have decided to take some time off from the U.S. Men’s National Team in order to spend more time with my family. Having played overseas for the last 12 years, making this commitment to my family is very important. I am grateful for the understanding of Jurgen Klinsmann who is affording me the opportunity to spend some much needed time with my kids and to have the opportunity to compete for a spot upon my return. I understand that I will have to earn my place with the team and in the lineup when I come back, and I look forward to doing that. Physically I feel as strong as ever, and right now my heart, mind, and body all feel good about continuing on with the national team for the next World Cup. It is difficult to predict the situation in four years but I know this decision is right for me today.”

Howard will be 39 when the next World Cup comes around, we’ll see if he continues to stick with the team. Regardless, we’re glad to have Howard back at all.
