When Neymar Jr. was carted off the pitch in Brazil during the World Cup after suffering a fractured vertebrae, his team went on a downward spiral and the host nation went crashing out of the tournament.
Earlier this week, Neymar made his return as a member of his club team, Barcelona, and looked to be in top form as he scored two goals against Mexican side Club León for The Joan Gamper Trophy at Camp Nou.
Unfortunately for Neymar, the injury bug has struck once again.
According to reports, Neymar injured his left ankle during practice with Barcelona Thursday.
Following the Thursday training session Neymar Jr. complained about some pain in his left ankle, and tests have confirmed that the player has a Grade 1 ankle sprain. The Club’s medical team has indicated that his return to training will depend on how the injury treatment evolves.
With the new injury, Neymar may miss the La Liga opener as Barcelona plays Elche on Sunday.
At this point, there is no way to tell when Neymar could return to the pitch, but with a mere sprain he should not be gone for long.
Expect the club’s medical team to take Neymar’s injury slow in order to avoid sustaining any further damage to his ankle. Although there is no question Neymar would love to join his club Sunday and beyond, his health is of the utmost importance to the team.
