23 year-old bantamweight prospect Brian Ortega has tested positive for the banned substance drostanolone, an anabolic steroid, following his win at UFC on FOX 12. Ortega submitted Mike De La Torre in the first round of their undercard bout, remaining a perfect 9-0 as a result, though – as a result of the test failure – has now had the win overturned.
According to a report by Sherdog, ‘T-City’ has been suspended for nine months and fined $2,500 by the California State Athletic Commission for the test failure. He will have 30 days to file an appeal.
The CSAC used the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for testing, which Georges St-Pierre encouraged the UFC to use in the past, with all but one sample – Ortega’s – getting the all-clear. He becomes the second RFA champion to join the UFC and go on to test positive for drostanolone, as Kevin Casey was caught in July.
With stricter drug testing employed by the UFC and various commissions across the country, the amount of failed tests are on the rise and are only expected to increase.
Brian Ortega’s record now stands at 8-0 (1 NC), with four submission victories in his career. He will carry out a nine-month suspension, unless, should he decide to, his appeal is successful.
