More from Premier League

After a very rocky start for Manchester United that almost saw them give up a goal in the game’s opening minutes, the team turned it around soon thereafter with a wonderful goal from Juan Mata in the 17th minute.

Antonio Valencia streaked down the right side of the pitch and sent a cross right into the box beyond multiple defenders to the waiting Mata who scored with his left foot (Video here).

The goal seemed to give Manchester United a much-needed boost of confidence, but Sunderland answered quickly with a goal of their own. In the 30th minute, Tom Cleverley of Manchester United conceded a corner kick to Sunderland.

Sebastian Larsson whipped the corner kick into the box to the waiting Jack Rodwell, who headed the ball into the back of the net. The goalie had no chance to save the shot as Rodwell’s positioning was impeccable.

The rest of the match saw both teams make a handful of excellent defensive plays to stop the other side from scoring.

Although the chances were plentiful, both goalies and defenses stood tall when it mattered.

In the 62nd minute of the game, with time waning, Ashley Young had the ball in the box with Juan Mata waiting in open space for a pass. If Young was able to get the ball to Mata, they may have taken the lead and won the game.

Instead, the ball got just ahead of Young in the box as he tripped over a Sunderland defenders feet looking for the penalty. Instead of the penalty being awarded or play being allowed to continue, Young was booked with a yellow card for simulation.

With only a few minutes remaining in the game Young went down with an apparent injury, but was able to walk off the pitch under his own power.

Although the chances were there for Manchester United to close out the game, they will have to be satisfied leaving Sunderland with a draw.
