Who will be under center when the Minnesota Vikings open their season? Currently, we don’t know as the coaching staff has yet to make a final decision on who they will name their starting quarterback.

More from Minnesota Vikings

It’s been a back-and-forth scenario during training camp and the preseason as Mike Zimmer has routinely praised both Matt Cassel and Teddy Bridgewater, only to knock both down a few pegs as well soon after. It would seem logical that Cassel does have the inside track to the starting gig considering his veteran status and familiarity, though Teddy Bridgewater has been closing the gap.

As of now, nobody is ready to make an official announcement as the the Minnesota Vikings prepare for their fourth and final preseason tilt against the Tennessee Titans.

"In the wake of Saturday night’s preseason contest at Kansas City, Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer was asked whether he could shed light on the competition at starting quarterback between veteran Matt Cassel and rookie Teddy Bridgewater.“No,” Zimmer told reporters, via comments circulated by the Chiefs."

While Cassel may have a small advantage simply because Bridgewater is a rookie, you’d have to assume the leash will be extremely shot if Cassel doesn’t perform up to expectations. Teddy Bridgewater is the future of the Vikings organization and given that Matt Cassel is essentially a stop-gap signal caller, it would seem Bridgewater should eventually find himself under center if he’s not awarded the job before the season begins.

For now though, it appears to be a coin flip which will likely be decided during the game against the Titans.
