With the 2014 NFL season just around the corner, the entire league is being evaluated to a near frenzy. From star quarterbacks to head coaches on the hot seat, there is plenty to discuss in the lead-up to opening night, and while the tight end position doesn’t often find its way into the headlines, there were a couple of off-field stories that kept the multi-faceted position in the consciousness of the “casual” fan during the summer.

The elite tier is well-defined with regard to the best tight ends in the league, but with injuries, situations and even positional deployment issues to shake things up, it is time to rank the top players at the position. Before we get started with the top ten, we will touch on some “honorable mentions” who could be on the ascent, but without further ado, let’s get to it.
