Top Mets prospect Noah Syndergaard unlikely to make debut in 2014

As teams fall out of contention down the stretch of any given MLB season, one thing that they still have to look forward to is the arrivals and debuts of their top prospects.

In the right situations, it makes sense for teams to get these players, especially young pitchers, exposed to what it’s like to play at the big league level in games that are otherwise less meaningful in the standings. At the same time, teams don’t want to rush their prized assets out of the minor leagues if it might hinder their future development.
That is the balancing act that teams always face. When it comes to the New York Mets and their top prospect, starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard, the team has made the decision that he will not make his big league debut during the 2014 season.
Marc Carig of Newsday writes the following:
"Mets manager Terry Collins said Saturday that a September call-up would hinge on whether the 21-year-old has enough innings remaining to make more than a brief appearance. In 24 starts at Triple-A Las Vegas, Syndergaard is 8-7 with a 4.85 ERA in 1241/3 innings. Though Collins didn’t offer a specific number, he said the pitcher has “not very many” left before hitting his innings cap."
With the return of Matt Harvey and the rise of pitchers like Syndergaard, Rafael Montero, and Brandon Nimmo, it appears that the Mets have a bright future on the mound, even as soon as 2015. Unfortunately for Mets fans, they will have to wait just a bit longer for that future to actually arrive.
Baseball America ranked Syndergaard as the top prospect in the entire Mets’ system in 2014.
