The Buffalo Bills’ quarterbacks have not instilled any confidence this preseason. There is only so much time for jitters and coming-to-speed. The Bills need starter E.J. Manuel to step up now — especially because backups Jeff Tuel and Thad Lewis are making it clear they aren’t much of an option.

Manuel needs a good performance to get his legs underneath him. But with only one preseason remaining, it’s a bad place to be in as a franchise. Their head coach recognizes that.

“I’m not going to sit here and say I’m satisfied with the backup quarterback because I’m not,” Doug Marrone said following the Bills’ discouraging 27-14 loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Nothing is working for the Bills. Originally intended as stopgaps for E.J. Manuel, Tuel and Lewis are a combined 46 of 78 for 404 yards with 2 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in the four preseason games, via The Democrat and Chronicle. Yet the guy who is supposedly push both of them out of the picture has yet set himself apart. Manuel is 47 of 75 for 461 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions this preseason.

The Bills have a squadron of talented, young wide receivers. Players like Sammy Watkins, Mike Williams, Robert Woods and Marquise Lee have all demonstrated promise. If they have any hope of getting their careers going, however, they’ll need one of these quarterbacks to emerge.
