Manchester City and Liverpool are squaring off in the final game of the second week of Premier League action. It is clearly the biggest match of the weekend and possibly one of the biggest of the season. Manchester City edged out Liverpool in the final weeks to win the 2013-14 Premier League title.

More from Premier League

The two are expected to contend for the Premier League title again this season with both rosters loaded with talent.

The game was a back and forth between the two sides for the majority of the first half. While Manchester City was leading in the possession, it felt like an even split with the chances Liverpool was getting on goal and the attacks they were making.

At the end of the first half the Manchester City offense really began to pressure the Liverpool defense. A ball came into the box in the 40th minute and new Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno tried to clear the ball away, but he whiffed on it.

That allowed Stevan Jovetic to get the ball and rip a shot on goal. He went low and right at Liverpool goal keeper Simon Mignolet to give the defending champions a 1-0 lead in the game.

Things got worse for Liveprool early in the second half. Samir Nasri was coming down the right side of the box and made an incredible pass towards the other corner high in the box.

Jovetic, who made a great pass to start the play, then made the run to that spot. Once Nasri’s pass got to him he ripped it on goal to score giving Manchester City their second goal of the game.

A little over 10 minutes later, a beautiful through ball from Jesús Navas found Sergio Agüero breaking into the box. Agüero then puts the ball low and on goal to give Manchester City their third goal of the game.

What looked like a remarkable match up between two teams that will contend for the Premier League turned into a blow out in the 69th minute.

Later in the game Liverpool were able to pull a goal back to make things more respectable. Liverpool subbed on Rickie Lambert, a new signing from Southampton during the summer transfer window. He got a cross into the box from Daniel Sturridge and headed it in on goal. Manchester City goal keeper Joe Hart made the save, but the ball appeared to go off of defender Pablo Zabaleta’s leg and back in on goal.

Ultimately it was credited to Zabaleta as an own goal.

That looked like it might have been able to spark a Liverpool come back but they found themselves on the defensive again.
