10 worst films of summer 2014 season

While it’s easy to list the top ten films of the 2014 summer season, simply because you can look at which ten films grossed the most, finding the worst films of the summer season is often a tad bit harder. For starters you have to consider what films were truly summer only fare, which films lost money after deducting their budgets, and then of course there is the simple opinion that often plays into judging a film. Instead of opinion we look at number of theaters vs. box office expectations and budget. We will leave the lack of critical acclaim to someone else. Here are the films that did not do well this summer.

Let’s Be Cops was released in 3,140 theaters and has made just over $46 million dollars. The film had a budget of just $17 million but the studio was hoping for a larger build off it’s cast that included Damon Wayans, Jr. and Jake Johnson. The film added only $2 million in foreign box office. To it’s credit it has only been at theaters for two weeks and should get some legs as it hits more of the lower end theater chains.

Into the Storm was this decades Twister. Or it was supposed to be. The film opened in early August to a budget of $50 million but has yet to reach $40 million domestically bringing in just over $38 million. The film will likely find legs on the home video market. Adding in the foreign market however brought the films take thus far to over $68 million so it has at least earned it’s money back.

Earth to Echo screamed ET: The Extra Terrestrial but filmgoers never connected to it in the same way. The film was made on a budget of $18 million and has made $43 million domestically and internationally combined. The film was released in the U.S. in early July.

Sex Tape had the cast, Cameron Diaz and Jason Segal. It also had the mid-range budget of around $40 million. While it’s adult themed content would alienate younger audiences, older audiences didn’t find the film all that funny as it has only made $38 million domestically and $38 million internationally. The film was released in July and won’t get legs again until it’s home video release.

Not all Disney films can be a success. Made for a very modest $25 million, Million Dollar Arm failed to reach the $40 million mark coming in at just over $36 million since it’s May release. The film managed only another $400,000 internationally.

Eric Bana’s horror vehicle Deliver Us From Evil had a budget of $30 million and made it’s money back thanks to $17 million on the global market. It made just over $30 million domestically since it’s July 2nd release.

Sylvester Stallones third Expendables project has been a huge box office disappointment thus far. In part due to the film being leaked online a month prior to it’s release and in part do to it’s PG-13 rating. Regardless the film opened  to only $15 million on over 4,000 theater screens. To be fair the film is still in theaters as it’s only been released two weeks and when combined with it’s foreign take has made almost $50 million. Everyone involved expected more though.

The Giver was released on over 3,000 screen on August 15th and stars Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites, and Jeff Bridges. The film had a budget of $25 million but only managed to make just over $12 million it’s opening weekend. The film thus far has only made $24 million.

On May 9th, Clarius Entertainment released Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s return. An animated project with a budget of over $70 million. Yes, $70 million. To date the film has made $11 million. That’s combined domestic and foreign box office. The film was released to over 2, 600 theaters making it one of the worst films of the summer season.

Our last film is still in theaters and may eventually make something as it hasn’t been released long, about five days to be exact but given the hype and promotion surrounding Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For it’s opening weekend take of $6 million was not what the studio expected. The film thus far has made $11 million worldwide in it’s five days.
