One of the most interesting, or entertaining, plot lines of the NBA free agency period in July was the back and forth between the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets front office. The Mavericks submitted an offer to Rockets’ forward Chandler Parsons, they waited to see what they would do till the last second to make the Mavericks sweat.

More from Dallas Mavericks

Oh, and there is that standing offer of a max deal for Dirk Nowitzki to join the Rockets and leave the Mavericks.

They had previously gone toe-to-toe over Dwight Howard a few summers ago, with the Rockets winning in that situation. Heading into this summer Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was motivated to get the better of Rockets and general manager Daryl Morey.

“Oh, all good business is personal. Trust me, there’s nobody more competitive than me,” Cuban said on KRLD-FM 105.3 The Fan, via the Dallas Morning News. “Every bit of me wanted to kick his ass and I would have felt bad. Obviously they got Dwight [Howard] a couple of years ago. Yeah, I wanted to beat him. And that’s a compliment to him. Daryl is very smart. It was very much like a game of chess.”

All that being said, Cuban still considers the San Antonio Spurs to be their biggest rivals.

“It’s still the Spurs,” Cuban said. “Probably the Houston Rockets more now with what happened to Chandler Parsons. Oklahoma City is still going to be strong. But, yeah, it’s still got to be the Spurs.”
