The Cincinnati Bengals and linebacker Vontaze Burfict appeared to have a deal in place last week. After it hit the usual destinations on the rumor mill, it was widely expected the signing would be announced within the day. It’s nearly a week later though and Burfict remains unsigned. Not only that, but the tackle machine in the Bengals front seven won’t comment on proceedings, per the Cincinnati Enquirer.

More from Cincinnati Bengals

After a stellar 2013 season that saw Burfict post 113 solo tackles and 170 tackles total, along with three sacks and an interception, it was widely expected the Bengals would pay the man, lest they watch him walk out the door. Last week, it was then reported that the two sides were closing in on a four-year deal worth $20 million.

Now it appears something has held up the works on such a deal, leaving Bengals fans in limbo in regards to one of the team’s most valuable members of the front seven.

This isn’t necessarily bad news for the Bengals though, despite the fact that neither side will confirm or deny anything relating to contract talks. It could just be a matter of sliding around guaranteed money some before both sides can sign at the bottom. Still, it’s hard to believe Burfict and the team don’t want this whole matter behind them before Week 1, lest it become a distraction.
