The San Francisco Giants are still very much alive and in control of their spot in the National League playoff race. They were not about to let the lowly Colorado Rockies come into town and put a black mark on those plans this week.
Entering Tuesday night’s game, the Rockies had actually won four straight against the Giants. That might have had Colorado, or what’s left of them, thinking about playing spoiler against a divisional foe. Starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner put a stop to those plans on Tuesday with a game, and on Wednesday it was Buster Posey who ensured a Giants’ victory.
This one was in doubt until the very end, with the game tied at 2-2 entering the bottom of the ninth inning. With a runner on Posey faced the hard-throwing Juan Nicasio out of the Rockies’ bullpen. Posey was able to get the barrel to a pitch up in the zone, get on top of it, and drive it over the left field fence with authority for the thrilling walk-off win.
It was Posey’s third home run in the last two days, and it clinched another key victory for the Giants as they eye a run to the playoffs in September.
