Controversial offensive lineman Richie Incognito is back and available for NFL teams to sign after a 2013 season marred and ultimately lost due to  problems of his own creation.

More from Indianapolis Colts

The bullying situation that unfolded between Incognito and Jonathan Martin is well known by now. It is not clear yet if Incognito will catch on with a team and play this season, but that is looking more and more likely after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers got the ball rolling by expressing interest this week.

Another team that might be interested, or should be interested, is the Indianapolis Colts. That’s according to Mike Wells of ESPN.com, who also passes along the following quotes from Indy head coach Chuck Pagano about the possibility of landing Incognito.

"“I think anybody that’s on the street right now after cut downs this weekend, anybody that comes available we’ll discuss,” Pagano said. “We will not … say yay or nay based on history. If it makes sense, if it’s going to help us win, and it’s the best thing for the team and this organization, it doesn’t matter if it’s Richie or anybody else, we’ll do what’s right for this organization, for what’s best for this team. What gives us the best chance to win.”"

Each team has to weigh the potential distractions with the football benefits of the move, doing so with the understanding that distractions in the NFL come with a lot more buzz and noise thanks to the way the sport is covered. The volume would be especially loud for whichever team signed Incognito after all the attention paid to him and Martin last year.

Wells also notes that it would be an interesting dynamic in Indianapolis because so many of Martin’s Stanford teammates play for the Colts, including Andrew Luck.

Still, if the football side trumps everything else and the Colts identify Incognito as a guy who can fill a need for them, anything is possible. If you’ll indulge the cliche, the NFL is a bottom line business in the end.
