Jadeveon Clowney, Houston Texans linebacker

Starting with the most obvious choice, the No. 1 overall pick, Clowney has garnered as much hype as any defensive rookie in recent memory. By now, most know about the lofty comparisons he’s drawn (see: Taylor, Lawrence).

Clowney is transitioning from college defensive end to outside ‘backer in the Texans’ 3-4 scheme. That’s never an easy switch for first-year players; the responsibilities for an OLB, such as setting the edge, are vastly different from DE. Defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel has indicated Clowney will only see meaningful snaps if he masters his position.

Assuming he gets it down pat, Clowney has the potential and opportunity to wreak absolute havoc. He’s looked, at times, unblockable in preseason action, due in part to the presence of All-Pro linemen J.J. Watt, who draws continual double teams.

If the stars align, he could run away with DROY honors this season.
