The Denver Broncos identified the defensive side of the ball as their primary focus this off-season. With an offense that is ready for the Super Bowl, they made a number of moves to try to elevate their defense up to that level as well.

It seems odd to think that they would cut one of their best defensive players from the 2013 season in that context, but that is exactly what they did on Saturday as they made their final decisions to bring their roster down to 53 players.

In a surprising move, the Broncos released defensive lineman Kevin Vickerson.

Per Mike Klis of the Denver Post:

It might be that Vickerson’s troublesome injury from last season lingered as part of this decision. Brutal though that seems, the NFL is a bottom-line business and maybe the Broncos decided they could not run with Vickerson and the risk of re-injury.

At age 31, Vickerson is coming off a 2013 season in which he recorded 22 tackles and one sack while playing quality snaps before injuring his hip. He spent the last four seasons with the Broncos after playing the first three years of his career with the Tennessee Titans.
